Safety First, Always

At Bike Bus Edmonton, we believe that every child deserves a joyful, empowering, and safe way to get to school. That’s why safety is at the heart of everything we do—from how we plan our routes to how we train our volunteers.

Riding in a group builds confidence, visibility, and community. But it also requires thoughtful coordination, clear communication, and shared responsibility. We’ve developed a set of safety practices that make our rides not only possible, but powerful.

Whether you're a parent, a volunteer, or a curious neighbour, we want you to know how we keep our riders safe, what to expect on ride day, and how you can help make each journey smooth and secure.

Let’s roll—safely, together.

    • Trained adult volunteers lead each ride in three key roles:

      • Pilot – Leads from the front, sets the pace, and regroups riders before crossings.

      • Sweeper – Rides at the back to ensure no one is left behind.

      • Crossing Supervisor – Assists at intersections and helps riders make safe decisions.

    • Riders receive clear safety instructions before each ride.

    • Emergency protocols are in place for weather, mechanical issues, and medical events.

    • Rides run in most weather, including rain and winter conditions.

    • Rides may be cancelled for:

      • Rain on morning rides

      • Lightning within 10 km

      • Severe weather alerts

      • Poor air quality

      • Insufficient adult leadership

    • Children can ride independently if they:

      • Can start, stop, and steer confidently

      • Maintain balance at slow speeds

      • Ride continuously for 500 m

      • Follow instructions and make basic safety decisions

    • Younger or less experienced riders can join as passengers in trailers, cargo bikes, or child seats.

    • Routes are chosen to minimize safety risks.

    • Leaders have emergency preparedness plans

    • Riders are taught real-world skills in a structured, supportive environment.
